The Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) was manufactured and released by Sony Computer Entertainment in 2000, following on from the commercial success of the original PlayStation. The PlayStation 2 went on to become the best selling console of all time, selling over 155 million units worldwide, helped by the extensive games library produced by leading publishers.
There was again a major revision to the PlayStation 2 which saw Sony release a slimline version of the console commonly known as the PS2 Slim that featured a much smaller, more compact design and top loading DVD drive. An additional revision of the PlayStation 2 was released only in Japan, the PlayStation X (PSX) featured a Sony digital video recorder, internal hard drive and integrated PlayStation 2 console.
Sony continued to enjoy success with the second instalment of their console efforts. Many of the characters and titles that appeared on the original PlayStation returned including Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider and Gran Turismo. They were not alone in the next generation of consoles however and were joined by new and innovative releases such as Jak and Daxter. New and returning heroes helped the console gain a significant foothold in the market and ultimately contribute to the success the company still enjoys to this very day.
