The SEGA Game Gear is an 8-bit portable games console produced and released by SEGA in the very early 1990's. The Game Gear was released to compete with rival Nintendo GameBoy and had many enhancements over its competitors’ hardware. Much of the SEGA Game Gear's hardware is similar to the SEGA Master System, along with a full colour, landscape orientated, backlit screen, the Game Gear was pitched as a technically superior piece of hardware in comparison to Nintendo's portable device.
Despite the superior hardware of the SEGA Game Gear, its limited game library and short battery life meant it was unable to surpass the strong sales of its competitors and was discontinued in 1997. However the Game Gear was re-released as a budget system by Majesco in 2000, under license by SEGA and had some enhancements to the screen which improved the picture quality and brightness. The Majesco version of the Game Gear can be identified by either the re-designed box or by the monochrome Game Gear logo on the console itself.
The SEGA Game Gear had a few colour case variations, some exclusive to Japan, that were released in limited numbers and are therefore very rare, but we aim to source and stock as many of them as possible. Of course, if there's anything in particular that you require, please let us know and we will do everything we can to source it for you and will be back to you as soon as we can.
We also offer various modifications for the SEGA Game Gear including LCD screen replacements and capacitor replacement (re-capping), so please get in touch to discuss any requirements that you have.
All of our SEGA handhelds have been tested to ensure that they are in full working order. Our grading system makes it simple to identify exactly what condition your new console is in. Trust RetroPlayers to equip you with amazing retro consoles and you won't be disappointed.
