The SEGA Dreamcast games console saw its first release in 1998 in Japan, with North America and European releases following in 1999 and was to be SEGA's last entry in the home console market as a manufacturer of hardware. The SEGA Dreamcast was powered by a Hitachi SH-4 CPU and an NEC PowerVR2 GPU and saw various colour case iterations throughout various regions including the highly sort after SEGA Sports, Regulation 7 (R7) and Seaman editions. Much like the SEGA Saturn, the Dreamcast's life was short lived and performed relatively poorly due to an array of reasons and eventually was discontinued in 2001 seeing SEGA's exit from the console business.
Despite a very short lifespan, reviewers and fans of the system considered the Dreamcast to be ahead of its time, with some fantastic, innovative games released on the platform such as Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Sonic Adventure and Shenmue. Also the SEGA Dreamcast was the first console shipped with a modem and/or broadband adapter and focused on online play which is something that the next generation of consoles have utilised to bring an interactive gaming experience to players.
