Nintendo's Super GameBoy is a 16-bit cartridge adapter for the SNES and Super Famicom consoles. It was the first GameBoy add-on to be produced for a Nintendo console. The Super GameBoy allows GameBoy and some specific GameBoy Color games to be played and controlled using the SNES systems controller and display to be output to a TV.

The Super Game Boy consists of the same hardware as the GameBoy; inside the cartridge is a separate CPU that processes the games whilst the SNES only provides user input, output of graphics and the additional colouring, similar to the Atari 5200 version of the Atari 2600 adapter.

The original Super Game Boy is known to play the game program and its audio 2.4% faster than other Game Boy hardware. This is due to the use of the SNES's clock speed divided by 5, which ends up being 4.295 MHz rather than 4.194 MHz. The timing issue was later rectified in the Super GameBoy 2.

Super GameBoy 2

The Super GameBoy 2 was released exclusively in Japan in 1998. It features a few additions and improvements over the original, including a link port to allow a user to access two player mode via the link cable, the green game link LED and a red power LED indicator. It also runs at the exact speed of the GameBoy. In addition, it came with eight new borders, which replaced those in the original model, however it retained the same palettes and colouring tools as on the original model. Contrary to rumours, the system is unable to run GameBoy Color exclusive games and only those compatible GameBoy Color games usually highlighted by the SGB logo on the cartridge label or a black cartridge. An example of a compatible GameBoy Color game is Tetris DX that features a black cartridge and SUper GameBoy compatible logo on its label. Also, this version of the Super GameBoy does not allow the change of borders in games that have built in borders. Some games have features only available through the Super GameBoy 2 such as a special Tetris DX border.
