Following on from the incredible success enjoyed by the GameBoy, 1996 saw the release of the Nintendo GameBoy Pocket - a smaller and lighter product which was less power hungry than its predecessor requiring just 2 x AAA batteries. On top of this, it boasted a larger, true, black and white screen rather than the “pea soup” monochromatic display and was instantly available in a choice of colours - something that wasn’t possible for five or six years after the release of the original Game Boy.
A well timed release coincided with the phenomenal fan favourite that is the Pokemon franchise, which may go some way to explaining the console’s prosperity although it would be more than unfair to assume this is the case. There weren’t too many complaints with the original unit but those small creases were ironed out with the GameBoy Pocket. Extended battery life, a larger screen and the ability to slide the console in and out of a pocket at ease added to the sense of excitement surrounding this product without taking away from the winning formula Nintendo had produced.
The revised unit even played the same games as the original meaning that hours of fun of already owned games and new releases were possible without the need to be switching back and forth between the two. This essentially meant that classics such as Super Mario Land and Tetris were in no danger whatsoever and helped them to maintain their iconic legacy even as far as up to today.
Here at RetroPlayers, we are huge fans of the GameBoy Pocket and believe that it’s never too late to play with your favourite console of years gone by.
