Nintendo GameBoy Light Consoles
Released exclusively in Japan, the Nintendo GameBoy Light took the country by storm in the spring of 1998 and seeked to improve further on the already world renowned GameBoy franchise.
Comprising of a few handy upgrades over the original and Pocket versions, the Light featured an electroluminescent backlight finally giving handheld gamers a way to continue playing in the dark. It made use of 2 x AA batteries which would last for around 20 hours without the light turned on and around 8 hours whilst using the backlight.
The Nintendo GameBoy Light was predominantly available in two strong and bold colours - silver and gold. On top of this, further editions were released down the years including the Astro Boy clear, Osamu Tezuka World red and clear, Pokemon Centre Tokyo yellow variations.
Although the Game Boy Light may have a limited run - it was only six months after release that the Game Boy Color was made available - it was an undoubtedly fruitful time. Its green backlight proved to be a game changer although it would remain the only backlit console from the Japanese gaming giants until the Nintendo DS came along.
Due to its rarity given the fact that it was released in Japan only and there aren’t too many of the retro consoles around, these units can be sourced but may cost a premium, especially for those models that had limited numbers made. Please get in touch to discuss your requirements and we will do everything in our power to get you exactly what you want.
