The Nintendo 64, also known as the N64 was the third generation of home video game console released to Europe in 1997. The name derives from the 64-bit CPU and the console remained on the market until early 2003.
N64 consoles and games were the last major home gaming systems to make use of cartridge based play. The cartridge based system helped reduce piracy on the platform when many of the competitors in the console market had moved to much cheaper and somewhat more convenient CD and DVD based media for games.
The Nintendo 64 went up against the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn in terms of competition and it performed well during its shelf life. Almost 33 million units were sold and the initial success of the console led to various N64 consoles and controllers in different colours, styles and designs, many of them limited edition special items.
The console was released with two games in Europe. Pilotwings 64 and the system's greatest success, Super Mario 64. The library of games grew very impressively with titles such as Turok, Goldeneye, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Mario Kart 64 making it one of the most sought after retro consoles around.
