A joint project between Hudson Soft and NEC, the PC Engine games console has a 8-bit CPU and a dual 16-bit GPU. The console utilises Hu Card cartridges for games, but a later released add-on, the PC Engine CD-ROM, saw re-releases and new game releases on CD that utilised the increased storage space for greater gaming and satisfaction.
Introduced to Europe in the late 80s/early 90s, the NEC PC Engine was originally intended to go head to head with the Nintendo Entertainment System in the console market. Despite of this, it was involved in more direct competition with the Sega Mega Drive and upon its release a few years later, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
The Mega Drive and the SNES are two of the most iconic retro consoles to have ever existed and as you can probably guess, they performed significantly better in terms of sales and profits across most of the globe. In Japan however, the NEC PC Engine was received much more warmly and it even outsold the Super Famicom (SNES) for a period of time and ranked second, only behind the Mega Drive. This proves that the console was not a huge flop and is well worth having as part of your collection, whether you want to play for the first time, or have lost count of the number of sessions you've had with it.
The NEC PC Engine console is now available in various models and configurations, along with various modifications. If you would like to know more about the various modification options available with this console Please get in touch to discuss them and see how they could benefit you.
