NEC TurboGrafx-16 Consoles

The NEC TurboGrafx-16 games console was originally released in Japan as the PC Engine as a joint development by NEC and Hudson Soft. The TurboGrafx features an 8-bit CPU and a dual 16-bit GPU and is a highly collectable platform amongst gamers.

Most games compatible with the NEC TurboGrafx are built around Hu Card cartridges and relevant technology. There was however an add-on made available soon after the initial release which allowed CD based gaming which enabled programmers to make use of the increased storage space to provide an even better experience.

Released in Japan in October 1987, this part of the world would have to wait a full two years to get our hands on a TurboGrafx-16. It took its place amongst the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and the Sega Mega Drive and battled for supremacy of the home console division.

Of course, it's not very often that the Mega Drive, SNES and TurboGrafx-16 are mentioned in the same breath and the former two of the three comfortably outsold the latter one in Europe. This doesn't mean that the TC-16 isn't as great as the other two though and the proof of this is in the Japanese market share. It outsold the Super Famicom (SNES) at the time and was only behind the Mega Drive in terms of units sold.
